For your new blog response, please either 1) post a tentative thesis for Paper #2 (your in-class essay) here OR 2) comment on someone else's tentative thesis (is it debatable? is it specific enough? does it have a thesis map--list of supporting points?).

If you have any questions as you continue to brainstorm for your in-class essay, feel free to post them here as part of your blog response. I'll be checking the blog several times between now and Wednesday morning and will try to post answers to your questions.

Recap of prompt for Paper #2:First identify a SPECIFIC problem in education today [this is NOT going to be the major part of your paper]. Then, either 1) explain what the different causes for that problem are, OR 2) propose a feasible solution to the problem [this WILL be the major part of your paper]

Due: before our next class meeting

Announcements: For Wednesday's in-class essay, just bring Rereading America, paper, and a pen. You do not need anything else (disregard the part of the calendar that says to bring an outline).

  1. 1) A students ability to learn is hindered by factors such as the lack of funding, decaying learning facilities, and available resources.

  2. Thanks for being the first one to post! That thesis is a good start. Now, overall, can you make it more specific? Focus on a specific problem (students not being able to learn is broad) and be more specific by "lack of funding." Are you saying there's no funding? Insufficient funding? What's *sufficient* funding? For what?

A problem in education today is the varying teaching methods applied to different elementary schools keeping the poor and rich people unchanged. “Working-class” elementary schools have the poorest teaching methods being taught to children and solutions to enhance “working-class” schools’ teaching methods are by raising the standards for teachers, increasing teachers’ salary, and changing the curriculum of the “working class” schools.

  9. American education today has turned into a social totem pole, the higher up you are on it the better the education you receive. we do not have equal education anymore due to differences in funding, lack of motavation and parents in the society.

I think that this thesis is debatable but it could be a bit more specific. You could state whether or not social class being a main component of the quality of education you recieve is a good or bad thing. There also could be more explanation to why this fact is true.

  11. Some students place low on the placement tests and although passing these subjects in high school, they must retake them again in college. This can be quite discouraging for any student. It takes up precious time and money to complete these courses and results in many dropouts due to the discouragement of placing low or even getting stuck on a certain math or English level.

Contemporary elementary schools are not teaching students how to critically think in a philosphical manner. In other words, elementary school students are not being taught how to think, learn, and function as moral intellectual citizens. Given recent trends in education, there is no metaphorical light at the end of the tunnel. Indeed the path that education is currently on is ignorant and dark. My solution to this problem would be to include philosophy in the standard curriculum alongside mathematics, and english. There are several reasons why this addition is absolutely imperative.
