For your new blog response, answering the following questions:
1) Examine the Visual Portfolio on pp. 190-193. Choose one picture and explain what you think it might be saying about education in America. Cite specific details from the picture to make your point.
2) Finish reading LOP, Author's Note through Ch. 3. How would you describe the narrator of LOP so far? What do you think of the fact that he majors in zoology AND religious studies?
Due: Before our next class meeting
Length: One well-developed paragraph per question
Additional Reminder: Don't forget to bring all three books (Rereading America, Life of Pi, and Researching & Writing) to our next class meeting.

I choose the last pictue on page 192 with the little black girl attending a white school. I believe this is showing how education in america at this time was segregated and also how schools are in a way still like this today. In our education system your education is based on where you live and how weathly your parents are. If you are lower class you get a worst education and the high you are in the socail class the better your education is. In the picture this little girl is the first arican american to attend a all white school . But our education is no different today if your parents have money you attend better schools.
ReplyDeleteThe narrator in LOP is a bite weird and crazy. I just found it weird how fascinated he was in the sloath. But i think the book will be good because he is a little crazy and weird. Its a weird major i have never herd of anyone with zoology and religious studies, But i think it was cool how he got to travel a lot and do research in brazil
I chose the second picture with the boy whose graduating. The picture seems kind of odd to me, where the boy is supposed to be graduating but he looks very young and innocent. Aslo, in the background is a picture of a newspaper talking about the war and violence going on. What is the boys eduacation do for him when he is just going to have to fight in a war and deal with things he's never learned.
ReplyDeleteafter reading LOP, i thought that the narrator was very strange and random. he tells the story in chuncks instead of a nice flowing rythim like your just flipping to a bunch of different pages and reading short exerpts. he jumps around from topic to topic or throwsin stuff that doesn't seem relevent. At first he talks about his essay for Zoology and the sloths. i liked the info, thought it was intersting but he didn't need to go into all that detail about how the live did he? and then when he's talking about Mamaji and his swimming pools. A little background info is good but the discription of each pool and where it was and such is a little much and just got confusing instead of informative. i got lolst a few times about what he was saying or trying to say. Finally, i don't really have anything to say about his souble major. Not really strange or anything to me, why can't you major in both those things?
Question 1: I chose the last picture on page 192. this picture shows little black girl being escorted by four men in to school. I believe that this picture is saying even though these were the times of segregation that school is still so important to the young girl and her family that they are willing to risk racial torment.
ReplyDeleteQuestion 2: while reading Life of Pi, i felt that the was really weird; like random at times.some things were like cool to know but i could not see how it related.
The picture of The Graduate on page 191 shows the emotionals I believe many graduates out of high school or college feel. With the newspapaer as the backgound it sort of shows how now that the graduate is finished with school reality and real responsabilty are about to hit him really hard. The graduate looks a bit frightened and uncertain about what to do with his recent accomplishment and about what lies ahead. The way he is holding his diploma seems like he is scared to let go.
ReplyDeleteThe auther of LOP comes across as a person who likes to live in the moment with the way he seems to be jumping from country to country with little money. By him traveling it shows how dedicated he is to his work. He goes to the coutnries where his fictional works are placed so he can get a better grasp of the living conditions even if it isn't always the correct country. With him majoring in religion it explains why he actually took an interest in the man that told him the story that'd make him believe in god. I'm sure if he had no interest in religion he would have not even bothered with the guy. He probably feels passionate about animals for him to also have a major in zoology.

ReplyDeleteI chose the first picture to describe on page 190. I think the picture is illustrating males to attend schools because it is a picture of a boy in school with his stay-at-home mother dressing him. The title of this picture is illustrated in the boy’s expression. I think this picture shows how kids do not want to be in school. Maybe the education system is starting to not care about our children and their future by making the topics taught not interesting for the kids anymore. Also, the mother seems oblivious to the fact her son has that stern look on his face. This shows how parents don’t seem to pay attention to their children’s academic life.
The author seems a little odd. It looks like the author has random thoughts to what he is trying to get at. For example, he talked about the sloth, then about Pi loving Canada, and lastly about him being in the hospital. The author is very descriptive and has a way with giving you facts about random things he talks about. I think the author is deliberately doing this in the beginning to confuse us a little. I am not sure what the author is trying to put together to illustrate to us yet.
In The Graduate, Norman Rockwell is saying that education in America may have left it's graduates wide-eyed when entering a world for which their diplomas did not necessarily prepare them for. The backround behind the boy is a newspaper article addressing war threats and other realities the student will have to face especially if he is drafted into the war.
ReplyDeleteSo far, from reading Life Of Pi, I find the author interesting, his quirkyness seems like it will keep the book from being boring and I like that. It's unusual for someone who majors in somekind of science like zoology to be interested in religion because most scientists do many studies that contradict religion and are proven as scientific theories or facts. I think it is cool and that he is open minded and majoring in two majors that do not really go together at all.
1.The picture on pg. 191 reminds me a lot of my own graduation. We had our backs turned on the stuff that was going on all around the world throughout high school, and once we graduated we had to face all these real life issues. By having the boys back to the newspaper it demonstrates how oblivious he is to what is really going on outside of school. The headlines talk about war, the draft, and lack of jobs. He is just about to start his life and is completely unaware of how hard finding a job will be. In a way, I graduated with that mindset also. I thought that just because I had my high school diploma, I would be able to find a job easily.
ReplyDelete2.The narrator of LOP is an interesting person. He is intelligent and open minded. His fascination with how peaceful the sloth is and how it coexists with the rest of nature in a harmonious manner is insightful. I think that is what the narrator wants to find himself; a place where he can live peacefully. I think his choice in majors is unusual. I wonder what his motive was for choosing them and what he expects to learn from doing this.
Question 1: The picture I chose to discuss was the last one on page 192. The picture was titiled "The Problem We All Live With". To me this picture is portraying that education is important in order to be respected like men are. Maybe the young girl was put there in order to show people that without an education you will feel belittled compared to the surrounding people that do have good educations and careers. It seems this picture was also portraying the huge segregation problem we once had and this little girl is trying to show that she wants an eduation and is willing to deal with all the negativity her race gets as long as she gets a chance to have an equal education.
ReplyDeleteQuestion 2:After reading the Authors Note and first 3 chapters my opinion of the narrator is that he is exremely random. It is kind of difficult to keep up with all his different stories because he is constantly jumping from one to another. Even though he is random most of what he has to say is interesting and it makes me eager to read more. I think that his decision to major in Zoology and Religous subjects is just as random as he is. He seems to really like to study animals and other stuff. He went into some detail about sloths but I still am a little unsure about why I think he chos the majors he did.
The visual portfolio picture i chose was "the spirit of education" pg 190 This picture is explained in the title the "spirit of education" the child dress as the statue of liberty which is a symbol of freedom (in this case freedom of education) but the child does not seem too happy, his mother looks like she is encouraging and supportive. But yet the child seems to have a lot of angry in his eyes and seem like he does not want to be there.
ReplyDeleteThe narrator from the life of pi seem like this energetic adventurous guy. He seem like he has experienced many thing in his life and is very well educated. i found it extremely interesting that he had a double major in zoology and religious studies 2 completely different subject, which have nothing to do with one another and it was interesting how he drew comparisons between the 2 trying to connect them. overall the narrator seem to be a very well rounded guy!
The spirit of education is a wonderfully poetic image. It is strait forward and not disguised at all. The spirit of education is something that parents often have to instill in their children by force. At one point or another we have all resisted our parents' pressure to "go to school, work hard, get good grades" and any good parents put their feet down and made us do it anyway. We have all come to value education (obviously) and are consciously pursuing greater educations now, so our mentors were successful in instilling this spirit in us (even in spite of our best efforts.)
ReplyDeleteThe narrator of LOP is a bit spotty. He is all over the place and can't seem to find any continuity of a story line so far. I understand the importance of character development and foreshadowing, but do we really need the first 3 chapters devoted to it? Why can't we just find out about the character through the story? Maybe he really needed to impress his scholastic aptitudes to set up how the story is going to affect him, but this seems kind of amateurish so far.
"The Problem We All Live With" concerns me the most as far as what the tile means. Most obviously it defines what America thinks about African Americans being educated and how they shouldn't have that same privilege as the whites. The way I see this image is because the young black girl is walking behind the two white men in front of her. It seems she is trying to follow in the footsteps of a well-educated human being but due to her ethnic background, she will have some setbacks which is unfortunate. The title is another dead giveaway as to how certain races are treated even though they try just as hard as whites but don't get the same luxuries.
ReplyDeleteThe author in LOP seems like an eccentric yet a simple man just attempting to find his place in the world but maybe I'm overanalyzing it too much. He pays attention to the most simplest things that no one else would so you can tell he's obeservant. It's interesting how he majors in zoology and religious studies. Perhaps they do go hand in hand seeing as how animals are said to be humble and don't contain any of the sinful qualities that a human would have.
I chose to talk about the second picture, The Graduate. The first thing i noticed is the newspaper in the background. I think this is trying to say that he is out of school and is now in the real world. He has to face what is going on in the world and still thinkgs things wont affect him. He also has a strange impression on his face. It looks like a mix of confusion and surprise. I think he just doesn't know what to do now that he is out of school and has to support himself.
ReplyDeleteThe author in Life of Pi seems very sporadic and random with what he says. He will be talking about one thing, and jump into another story that is completely unrelated to the last. I like this alot as i think it will keep me interested in the book as i am not going to know what is going to happen next. I also think its strange how he majored in Zoology and Religion. I think it just shows his personality and how he can be sometimes.
The Graduate by Norman Rockwell is an image of a student that has obviously graduated school. Despite having be educated throughout his entire life, he seems to be oblivious to what is going on around him. School provides us with necessary skills to hold a job/career. But it does not prepare us for the real world. The real world is harsh and in your face. Unlike school, the real world will most of the time not give us a second chance, or "do-over".
ReplyDeleteAfter reading Life of Pi, I got a general sense of what type of person the narrator is. He decides to major in both religion and zoology. It seems to me that he majors in something he is actually interested in, which in this case is zoology and something that he cherishes which is religion. Although they are two completely different fields, both are similar in the sense that they both subjects focus on what most people decide overlook.

ReplyDeleteI believe that Norman Rockwells painting called The Graduate tells us that he thinks that our education system is not preparing people for the world. The graduate himself looks very intimidated, and behind him are a ton of newspaper headings talking about the cold war, draft, and atomic weopons. So presumably college has not prepared him to deal with the problems facing the world.
The Narrator is very entertaining. I like the way his mind darts about, and how he seems both serious and comedic at the same time. I think the narrators duel major tells us about his spirituality, and respect for animals. Perhaps he beleives animals are spiritually relevant themselves.
The African American girl on page 192 tells me that this that this was around the early 1960s when white schools were now allowing blacks to attend theirs schools. It shows that education evolved from segregating race and making it welcome. Its hard to believe that this was just not so long ago maybe about 50 years, but now we live in a world where its comfortable to have different ethnic backgrounds in one classroom. As an American society it has changed in a good way.
ReplyDeleteThe Narrator is a very unique person with a lot of character. He seems to be a well accomplished learner in the field of academics. His name is after a swimming pool, and he double majored in zoology in which i assume he is fascinated with animals, especially the sloth. I didn't know it slept for 20 hours!

i chose the second picture with the boy graduating. he seems like he would follow the rules and he got by. it seems like he graduated at a bad time because in the background it said that us is seeking jobs.
ReplyDeleteLife of Pi seems like its going to be funny. the author has a way with words. i like the way he describes things. i thought it was funny how his religous studies friends reminded him of the sloths. his majors are a bit odd and dont seem too common but he seems very interested in them
