    Denny’s extra credit
On Friday October 9th I went to the Denny’s on imperial by the 57 freeway in Brea at around twelve thirty am. I sat towards the back in plain view of the kitchen and some of the chiefs that were back there. When I first walked in with my friends it seemed like the place to be pretty busy for twelve thirty; the first lady I saw was the host that would be sitting me at my table. I requested where to sit just so I could see the kitchen, the hostess was pretty nice she looked clean cut; and she seemed like she was ready to go home already. I asked her what time she works till and she replied till two am; then I asked her is she liked her job and she replied with a whatever that she deals with it. So next after we had been seated I looked at the server and she was a white older lady and seemed nice but a little stressed out I saw that she was taking care of 4 other tables of younger people. She didn’t look like she was trying to smoke a cigarette every five minutes; but I did notice that she was getting harassed with orders by people more water etc. Finally I looked in the kitchen because were I was at I could see right into it; and I saw Mexican cooks who were rather loud and were not speaking any English. But the kitchen seemed rather clean and keep together fine. Also the whole restaurant seemed to be very clean and the employees well the servers seemed to put on a fake smile for each table they greeted. Over all I believe Denny’s would be a way better place to work then “jerry’s”.

  2. Denny’s write up
For this assignment I went to the Denny’s off of imperial and the 57 FWY. When I first walked in the doors I saw the manager sitting at a table with paperwork spread out around her. It took her a few seconds to realize I was there and when she did finally notice she immediately came over. As she talked to me about sitting and food orders her words were slow and very quiet. She even mumbled and slurred a few times. It gave me the impression she had been working fairly long. While I was there I also noticed the working conditions were very clean and organized. There were only two workers at the time and from a distance they bothed seemed alert and happy. At one point I noticed that one was singing to himself and another time they were both laughing at a joke or something. Once the server came to get me order I got a better look at his appearance. His eyes were puffy and had slight backs under them. He definatlly looked fatigued but not so bad that his eyes were bloodshot or red. I kept my eye on him and realized that he didn’t pop pills like in the essay but he and his coworker never sat down once the whole hour I was there. They were constantly up taking orders, cleaning tables, working the register. These guys did anything and everything and it wasn’t even the middle of the day, it was 10 o’clock at night. Finally the last thing I noted before I left was that the kitchen had constantly been making noise. Whether it was sizzling from the grill, water running from the sink, or dishes clanging together. Deffinatly never a dull moment in the kitchen.

  3. Late Friday night me and all my friends decided we were hungry. I suggested going to Denny’s so I compare Barbara Ehnrenreich’s experience with mine. We got there pretty late, somewhere around two. The place was surprisingly crowded. Before we walked in I saw two waitresses off to the side smoking. I am guessing they were on the break. Ehrenreich described how the waiters/waitresses live off cigarettes at her work. Our server was Asian and we had a difficult time understanding him. He didn’t look to happy to be working there and neither did any other waiter/waitress. In Serving in Florida Barbara hated when she kept getting sent back to the kitchen by her tables to get more catsup and more salad dressing. I started to feel bad for our waiter because I was with such a big group he probably had to go back to the kitchen at least five times to pick up things our table requested. Another thing I noticed was that most of the workers there were over probably forty years old. It was easy to notice that no body at Denny’s really enjoyed their jobs. Some of the workers look tired and annoyed. Our waiter tried to act like he was friendly and happy but it was noticeable that this was probably the last place he wanted to be. By the end of the night we were stuffed and happy we got to eat. Everyone only put in a little for tip and I felt bad so I went ahead and gave him an extra six dollars above the tip we already had for him. From what I saw I don’t think the working conditions at Denny’s were as harsh as the ones that Ehrenreich experienced at Jerry’s. Also I believe the minimum wage at Denny’s is higher than the minimum wage at Jerry’s. Overall when I left I felt bad for the waitresses that had families and bills to take care of because I don’t think one could really make a living off only working at Denny’s. I was positive that most of the older people that were working probably had second jobs.
