As you prepare for your in-class essay, you might want to consult the class notes that I'm posting here--they're the ones on Rhetorical Strategies.
http://www.sartuno.com/classdocs/Rhetorical_Strategies.doc

HOMEWORK:
--Stay on track with all the readings listed on your calendar. The fact that we didn't have class this past Monday will not change your homework reading schedule at all.

--However, you do not have to do an outline (because you are not allowed to bring notes to the in-class essay) and do you not worry about the Race Test either.

--For your blog response this weekend, post a tentative thesis here in response to one of the broad topics I gave you in class. [What has helped Pi survive? Choose one of the gender articles and discuss how its rhetorical strategies make it effective. How do RA articles respond to the idea that class is not an important part of our society?]

REMINDERS:
Bring your books, a pen, and paper to your in-class essay--but no outside notes (that includes prewriting, outlines, etc.)

Group 6: You will be presenting on Wed, 11/4

  2. Chose one of the gender articles that you found effective what specific strategies made it effective?

Maysan Haydar's "Veiled Intentions: Don't Judge a Muslim Girl by Her Covering", uses many rhetorical strategies to entice the reader. The most effective strategies used include: tone, use of ethos, and her purpose for the intended audience.

Pi's luck is what has helped him the most in his struggles to stay alive throughout his unfortunate events of being on a sinking ship, being on board with a hyena, and cohabiting with a tiger.

  4. The fear that Pi has of getting killed by the wild animals around him is also what is keeping him alive. Pi is preocuppied on figuring out how to not be eaten by Richard Parker instead of giving up on trying to survive out of realization that he might never return to land.

There are many factors that contribute to Pi's ability to survive. The most important of which is resourcefulness; Pi's tenacious abilitity to improvise solutions to his many problems proves to be his greatest asset.
